Interview with Shanti Subramanyam, CEO, Orzota, Inc. - Speaker at Global Data Science Conference - April 2018 Posted on : Feb 28 - 2018

We feature speakers at Global Data Science Conference - April 2 - 4  2018 - Santaclara - CA to catch up and find out what he or she is working on now and what's coming next. This week we're talking to Shanti Subramanyam, CEO, Orzota, Inc.(Topic : Time-Series Data Analysis In Minutes)

Interview with Shanti Subramanyam

1. Tell us about yourself and your background.

I am the Founder and CEO of Orzota, a company that builds big data and IoT solutions. I have spent most of my career in Silicon Valley, working for companies such as MIPS, Sun Microsystems, Yahoo!, etc. so I understand how to build robust, scalable and performant distributed systems with different technologies.

2.  What have you been working on recently?

At Orzota, our focus is on implementing big data architectures that integrate with existing systems to solve specific problems. We recently worked on a project to integrate data from an IoT cloud and built capabilities to automate analysis. IoT data will actually overtake all other types of data in terms of volume and velocity soon. Having the right strategy, architecture, tools and techniques to ingest, store, process and rapidly analyze this data in conjunction with other data sources will be key.

3. Where are we now today in terms of the state of Data Science, and where do you think we’ll go over the next five years?

I am heartened to see the importance of Data Science growing, even in larger, more traditional enterprises. We are of course, very far from the ideal adoption scenario. The holy grail for Data Science is not Machine Learning, Neural Networks, AI etc. but rather how can you productionize these models to take business actions and create true ROI for an organization. I hope to see big progress in this area in the next few years.

In terms of the science and technology aspects,  I believe in five years time we will no longer be talking about feature selection, machine learning, computer vision, models, etc. All of this will be automated under the covers. Feed data in and out will come the output we want.

4. What would be your pitch to folks out there to join your Organization? Why does your organization matter in the world?

The world is increasingly about data. Technologies may evolve - be it Hadoop, Spark, BlockChain, AI etc. but the fundamental value of data will only increase. Our company is about finding insights from data. How do you store, organize, manage, clean, transform and analyze data. If you are excited about working on data, come join us!

5. What are some of the best takeaways that the attendees can have from your talk?

IoT will be the dominant source of data very soon. And IoT data is nothing but time-series. Knowing how to analyze time-series data will be crucial to extract value from all this data. So come listen to my talk and learn why and how to develop insights, from exploratory to prescriptive in time series data.

6. What are the top 5 Data Science Use cases in enterprises?

I think that really depends on what type of enterprise you are. If you are a manufacturing company, use cases around machine maintenance, workflow optimization, will be important in addition to back-end use cases such as inventory and spend optimization, customer satisfaction, etc. If you are an insurance company, reducing claims by detecting fraud is usually the top use case.

7. Any closing remarks

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to speak at this conference and I hope to interact with many folks at the conference.
