The Future of AI in Design and Creativity

Abstract

Join Juan Noguera, Professor of Industrial Design at RIT, for a session exploring how we can tap into the power of artificial intelligence in design. AI can revolutionize your design process, making it faster, more efficient, and more innovative, without taking away from your creativity or critical thinking. Case studies and new developments will be featured, and Juan will show you ways you can incorporate these tools into both your professional work or your teaching. Since the emergence of DALL-E 2 and ChatGPT, there has been some apprehension surrounding AI technology, which is not unfounded. There is great debate surrounding the ethical implications of using pre-existing artwork, images, and content to train these AI products, as well as concern over the potential industries it may disrupt or alter. Additionally, there appears to be an AI arms race between major companies such as Google and Microsoft. Despite these concerns, AI image-generation programs can prove to be a valuable tool in the design process. While these programs do not replace the critical thinking skills and accumulated experience of designers, they do serve to stimulate creativity and expand the range of possibilities for product design. This session will cover best practices, including how to promote fair use and preventing cheating. its use on a variety of projects, ranging from Industrial Design, to User Interface design, storyboarding, and other applications.

Profile

Juan is an Industrial Designer and Educator He holds a Masters of Industrial Design (MID) from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and a Bachelors of Industrial design (BID) from Universidad Rafael Landivar, in Guatemala city. A Guatemalan, he was raised in a colorful and vivid culture. He quickly developed an interest in how things were made, tearing everything he owned apart, and putting it back together, often with a few leftover pieces. After graduation and a succession of projects related to design for development, Juan was chosen as a Fulbright fellow for the class of 2013 by the U.S. Department of State. He went on to be the lead designer for Voxel8, helping create the world’s first 3D Electronics printer. He is currently Assistant Professor of Industrial Design at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). Juan was awarded as one of MIT Technology Review’s Innovators Under 35 for 2017.
