Data Science from First Principles

The session introduces a foundational framework for data-driven problem solving using first principles. It explores the benefits of using first principles reasoning, breaking down the problems into fundamental components, and then explores an application of this framework for modeling and planning the charging infrastructure for Tesla.

Who is this presentation for?

Prerequisite knowledge:

What you'll learn?
- What is first principles reasoning? - First principles reasoning vs reasoning by analogy. System 1 vs System 2 - A universal framework for solving data science problems. - How to incorporate first principles at every step of the framework. - Example application of framework at Tesla – modeling and planning charging infrastructure at a global scale

Aditya Garg is an experienced data scientist passionate about using data science for social good. Currently, as a Sr. Data Scientist in the Charging Data and Modeling team at Tesla, he leads the network planning and modeling for Tesla's charging infrastructure around the world. Since graduating with an MS in Data Science from Columbia University, Aditya has worked at organizations like NASA GISS, IBM Research, and United Nations – using data to solve problems ranging from environmental modeling, social bias, and international peace and security. Aditya currently lives in San Francisco, and outside of work - enjoys spending times outdoors in the mountains, ocean, and experimenting with music and generative art in his spare time.
