Elon Musk throttles Grok Bot limits due to ‘unsustainably high’ costs Posted on : Nov 02 - 2026
Over Halloween weekend, several Grok Bot users encountered an unexpected problem: their weekly usage limits were suddenly exhausted, even though they had not used SpaceX’s AI agent overnight. Some users reported on X that their usage had jumped from around 50% to 100% without any activity.
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk confirmed on Sunday that the issue was not a technical glitch. Responding to a user on X, he explained that the cost of operating Grok Bot had become too high compared with the revenue it generated. However, Musk has not provided details about how usage limits will change going forward. He has continued promoting Grok Bot's ability to help users shop for family gifts.
Grok Bot has been presented as a major success for SpaceX, which recently went public. In a filing last month, the company stated that AI accounted for 52% of its income. Its newly renamed "Super Intelligence" division reported a profit of $431 million, an unusual achievement in the AI industry. That figure could have been higher without $1.2 billion in one-time expenses related to its acquisition of Cursor.
Musk recently described Grok Bot as experiencing the fastest product growth he had ever witnessed. However, subscribers are still waiting for clarity on how the latest usage-limit changes will affect them.
