OpenAI is finally bringing ChatGPT’s Chat and Work tabs together. Posted on : Nov 02 - 2026
OpenAI is planning to simplify the ChatGPT desktop app by merging its Chat and Work tabs into a single experience. Currently, users have to navigate between ChatGPT and Codex sections, with additional Chat and Work options under ChatGPT, which can make managing projects and workflows confusing.
According to an email sent to users, OpenAI will initially introduce the unified experience to a select group for feedback before making it widely available.
The goal is to let users move seamlessly from brainstorming ideas to executing tasks in one place. Users will be able to upload files, use plugins, build websites, create presentations, and complete web-based tasks while reviewing and guiding ChatGPT's progress. Codex will continue to remain a separate experience within the desktop app.
OpenAI also noted that ChatGPT and Codex will share the same token allowance pool. While this change is not expected to affect most users, some may experience more frequent usage-limit resets depending on their activity and the models they use.
The move follows Anthropic's similar decision in September to combine Claude's Chat and Cowork capabilities into a unified interface.
