Google Gemini is Closing In on 1 Billion Users Posted on : Jul 23 - 2026
Google’s Gemini is rapidly approaching the 1 billion monthly user milestone, potentially becoming the latest addition to the company’s elite lineup of billion-user products, which already includes Search, Gmail, Drive, Android, YouTube, and Chrome.
During Alphabet’s Q2 2026 earnings call, the company revealed that Gemini now has more than 950 million monthly users—nearly triple the number it had a year ago. In February, Google reported that the Gemini app had surpassed 750 million monthly active users.
At this pace, Gemini is closing the gap with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which reached 1 billion monthly active users in June.
“Users love new agentic features like Daily Brief and our personalized agent, Gemini Spark, which is now available in the U.S. and internationally,” Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said during the earnings call. “We’ve been shipping helpful new features like this at an incredible pace.”
Gemini’s growth extends beyond Android. The app has also built a significant presence on iOS, boosted by features such as the Nano Banana image-generation model. According to Appfigures, Gemini has been downloaded more than 137 million times on iOS over the past 12 months.
The broader AI assistant market is also becoming increasingly competitive. Sensor Tower’s latest “State of AI” report found that ChatGPT’s market share among AI assistants fell below 50% for the first time, while Gemini’s share increased to 27.7% during the first half of 2026.
AI assistants are increasingly being used as alternatives to traditional search. Yet Google says its core Search business remains strong, partly due to its AI-focused transformation. The company reported that its Q&A-style AI Mode surpassed 1 billion users during the quarter and is driving an incremental increase in search queries.
Google also said that advances in hardware engineering have helped reduce the cost of running AI Mode, even as the company continues to introduce more powerful models and new features.
