Interview with Google's Joshua Broyde: Key Challenges in Generative AI for Healthcare and Life Sciences Posted on : Jun 08 - 2026
Healthcare and Life Sciences (HCLS) organizations are rapidly adopting Generative AI to enhance patient care, accelerate research, and improve operational efficiency. However, healthcare's strict regulatory requirements and patient safety concerns create unique challenges that make GenAI adoption more complex than in many other industries.
To gain deeper insights into these challenges, I recently spoke with Joshua Broyde, Staff AI/ML Healthcare Specialist at Google, who will be presenting at the Global AI in Healthcare Virtual Conference on June 25th.
1. Can you tell us about your background and your journey working at the intersection of AI/ML and healthcare at Google?
Since I received my PhD in the field of Computational Biology in 2017, I have worked in the HCLS and AI field my whole professional life. For the past 7 years, I have worked end-to-end with medtech, pharma and healthcare companies to build and deploy AI and GenAI solutions.
2. Generative AI is advancing rapidly—what are the most critical challenges healthcare and life sciences organizations face when trying to adopt it today?
The key challenges as I see it are reliability and scale. Regarding reliability, Generative AI is having a tremendous impact on the HCLS industry, but deploying applications in production, especially for patient-facing applications, requires care. An additional challenge is scale; HCLS orgs are struggling to integrate GenAI in as many applications as possible, which presents unique complexities.
3. What are the biggest risks or limitations of using GenAI in clinical or life sciences environments (e.g., safety, hallucinations, compliance, bias)?
Safety, accuracy and compliance are still major risks when building GenAI applications. In addition, security is of paramount importance.
4. What are the key takeaways attendees can expect from your session on “Key Challenges in Generative AI in Healthcare and Life Sciences”?
Attendees will learn the specific challenges facing the HCLS world beyond general industry complexities when adopting Generative AI.
