Google just positioned itself as a serious contender in AI-powered design at IO 2026. Posted on : May 20 - 2026
Google made a major move into AI-powered design at Google I/O 2026 with the launch of “Pics,” a new Workspace app that lets users create visuals using simple text prompts. The tool is designed for everyone — from teachers and creators to startups and small businesses — making it easy to generate social media graphics, invitations, marketing materials, and presentations without advanced design skills.

What makes Pics stand out is its editable AI workflow. Instead of regenerating an entire image to fix one detail, users can simply click on the part they want to change, leave a comment like in Google Docs, or directly edit elements such as text, colors, and layouts. Google says the app is powered by Gemini and Nano Banana 2, enabling precise text rendering and detailed visual generation.

The launch puts Google in direct competition with Canva and newer AI-native design platforms, showing that AI-generated visual content is quickly becoming a key battleground in the AI race.
