Amazon has rolled out a new AI-powered feature that lets shoppers ask product-related questions and receive real-time, conversational audio replies. These answers are delivered by what the company describes as “AI-powered shopping experts,” presenting information in a natural, discussion-like style.
Called “Join the chat,” the feature is designed to save time by summarizing key product details without requiring users to sift through long descriptions or reviews. It draws on product specifications, customer feedback, and other insights to answer questions like whether a coffee maker is beginner-friendly or if a sweater feels uncomfortable based on reviews.
Rather than repeating generic responses, the AI builds on earlier answers to keep the interaction relevant and fluid—more like speaking with an informed store associate. Users can guide the conversation with follow-up questions, shaping the direction of the exchange as they go.
“Join the chat” is part of a broader experience called “Hear the highlights,” which provides short audio summaries across millions of product pages in the Amazon Shopping app. First tested last May, the feature is currently available in the U.S., though only select products include audio summaries for now.
To try it, users can open a product page, tap the “Hear the highlights” button below the product image, and either listen to a quick overview or select “Join the chat” to ask questions via text or voice. The audio continues playing even while users browse.
This addition expands Amazon’s growing suite of AI shopping tools, including Rufus for product research and comparisons, “Interests” for tracking items aligned with user preferences, and “Help me decide,” which recommends products based on browsing and purchase history.
