OpenAI has launched GPT-5.5, moving closer to its vision of an all-in-one AI “super app.” Posted on : Apr 24 - 2026
OpenAI on Thursday unveiled GPT-5.5, its latest AI model, which it describes as its most intelligent and user-friendly system to date. The upgrade introduces stronger capabilities across a wide range of tasks, and according to co-founder and president Greg Brockman, it moves the company closer to building a comprehensive AI “super app.”

Speaking with journalists, Brockman characterized the release as a major step toward more agent-like and intuitive computing. He noted that while GPT-5.5 represents meaningful progress, it’s just one milestone among many still to come. Compared to earlier versions like 5.4, the model delivers faster, more efficient reasoning using fewer tokens, effectively expanding access to advanced AI for both businesses and everyday users.

Brockman also reiterated the company’s ambition to develop a unified “super app”—a versatile, all-in-one platform combining tools like ChatGPT, Codex, and an AI-powered browser into a single service tailored for enterprise needs. This vision has also been discussed by co-founder Sam Altman. Meanwhile, competitor Elon Musk has expressed similar goals, aiming to evolve X into its own version of a super app.

The release comes amid a rapid cadence of model updates, with OpenAI having launched new versions in recent months. Chief scientist Jakub Pachocki said the pace of advancement is expected to accelerate, adding that recent years have felt “surprisingly slow” given what lies ahead.

GPT-5.5 is built to perform across a wide spectrum of applications, from enterprise-focused tasks like coding and knowledge work to more advanced domains such as mathematics and scientific research. OpenAI reports that the model outperforms both its predecessors and competing systems—including offerings from Google and Anthropic—on multiple benchmarks.

Competition with Anthropic remains a key theme. During the briefing, OpenAI staff were asked about parallels with Mythos, a cybersecurity tool recently introduced by Anthropic that has faced scrutiny over reported unauthorized access. Mia Glaese emphasized that GPT-5.5 will strengthen OpenAI’s capabilities in digital defense, highlighting the company’s long-standing focus on safe and secure deployment.

Chief research officer Mark Chen added that the model shows improved performance in handling computer-based workflows and delivers meaningful gains in scientific and technical research. He noted its potential to support expert researchers and accelerate areas like drug discovery, which has attracted growing interest across the industry.

GPT-5.5 is now broadly available. OpenAI says it is rolling out to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users within ChatGPT, while a more advanced 5.5 Pro tier will be offered to Pro, Business, and Enterprise customers.
