Not to be outdone by OpenAI, Apple is said to be developing its own AI wearable. Posted on : Jan 22 - 2026
Apple may be developing its own AI wearable, according to a report published Wednesday by The Information. The device is said to be a pin worn on clothing, equipped with two cameras and three microphones.

If the rumored product reaches the market, it would be another signal that competition in AI hardware is intensifying. The report follows remarks made Monday by OpenAI’s Chief Global Affairs Officer Chris Lehane, who told attendees at the World Economic Forum in Davos that OpenAI is likely to unveil its first AI hardware device in the second half of this year. Separate reports suggest that product could take the form of AI-powered earbuds.

According to The Information, Apple’s device is described as a “thin, flat, circular disc with an aluminum-and-glass shell,” which engineers hope to make roughly the size of an AirTag, though slightly thicker. The pin would reportedly feature two cameras—one standard and one wide-angle—along with a physical button, a speaker, and a Fitbit-style charging strip on the back.

Apple may also be attempting to accelerate development to better compete with OpenAI’s upcoming hardware. The pin could launch as early as 2027, with an estimated 20 million units planned for release, the report says. TechCrunch has contacted Apple for comment.

Still, consumer appetite for this type of AI device remains uncertain. Two former Apple employees previously founded Humane AI, a startup that also released an AI pin with built-in microphones and a camera. The product struggled after launch, and Humane shut down operations and sold its assets to HP less than two years later.
