OpenAI is making a major push into audio AI—and it’s about far more than giving ChatGPT a better voice. New reporting from The Information reveals that over the past two months, the company has consolidated multiple engineering, product, and research teams to rebuild its audio models from the ground up, all in preparation for an audio-first personal device expected to arrive within the next year.
 
The shift mirrors a broader transformation underway across the tech industry: a move toward interfaces where screens fade into the background and sound takes the lead. Voice assistants are already embedded in more than a third of U.S. households through smart speakers. Meta recently introduced a feature for its Ray-Ban smart glasses that uses a five-microphone array to isolate voices in noisy environments, effectively turning the wearer’s face into a directional listening device. Google has begun testing “Audio Overviews” that convert search results into conversational summaries, while Tesla is integrating xAI’s chatbot Grok into its vehicles to power a fully voice-driven assistant for navigation, climate control, and more.
 
This bet on audio isn’t limited to Big Tech. A wave of startups has pursued the same vision, with mixed results. Humane’s AI Pin burned through hundreds of millions of dollars before becoming a cautionary tale for screenless wearables. The Friend AI pendant—a necklace that promises to record your life and offer companionship—has drawn both fascination and concern over privacy and social consequences. Meanwhile, at least two companies, including Sandbar and another led by Pebble founder Eric Migicovsky, are developing AI-powered rings slated for 2026, designed to let users quite literally talk to their hands.
 
The devices may vary, but the underlying thesis is consistent: audio is becoming the dominant interface. Homes, cars, and even bodies are being reimagined as interactive surfaces.
 
OpenAI’s next-generation audio model, reportedly planned for early 2026, is expected to sound more natural, manage interruptions fluidly, and even speak over users mid-sentence—something today’s systems struggle to do. The company is also said to be exploring a broader family of devices, potentially including glasses or screenless smart speakers, that behave less like tools and more like companions.
 
None of this comes as a shock. As The Information notes, former Apple design chief Jony Ive—who joined OpenAI’s hardware push following its $6.5 billion acquisition of his firm io in May—has long prioritized reducing device addiction. He reportedly sees audio-first design as an opportunity to correct what he views as the excesses of screen-centric consumer technology.
