Meta’s chief AI officer, Alexandr Wang, informed employees in a memo Wednesday that around 600 positions will be eliminated from the company’s superintelligence lab, according to Axios.

While Meta declined to comment directly, a spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch that Axios’ reporting was accurate.

The cuts come as Meta, alongside OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, continues the race to build the most advanced AI systems. Over the summer, Meta made aggressive hiring moves, reportedly luring more than 50 researchers from rival firms with multimillion-dollar compensation packages — though OpenAI CEO Sam Altman noted that “none of [OpenAI’s] best people” accepted those offers.

“By reducing the size of our team, fewer conversations will be needed to make decisions, and each person will have greater responsibility, scope, and impact,” Wang wrote in the memo.

The move aligns with Meta’s ongoing “year of efficiency” initiative — CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s push for a leaner, faster organization after multiple rounds of layoffs last year.

Despite the cuts, Meta isn’t significantly shrinking its overall workforce. The company said many affected employees are expected to find new roles elsewhere within Meta.
