We feature speakers at 5th Annual Global Big Data Conference - August 2017 to catch up and find out what he or she is working on now and what's coming next. This week we're talking to Julius Bogdan, Director, SCL Health(Topic : Building A Modern Healthcare Data Platform (And Organization)
Interview with Julius Bogdan
1. Tell us about yourself and your background.
I am currently the Director of Analytics and Data Innovation at SCL Health. My mission is to create and direct an enterprise data strategy at SCL Health that revolutionizes our approach to population health management, individualized medicine, and patient outcomes. Prior to SCL Health I spent 17 years at Microsoft in various roles from Enterprise Architect to managing a Sales organization across multiple industries including Finance, Manufacturing, Government and Retail.
2. What have you been working on recently?
I am building an organization that leverages big data and advanced analytics to accelerate value and innovation in healthcare by discovering trends, patterns, and relationships in our data to improve patient care, outcomes, and financials in our healthcare system. We have built out a modern data architecture platform that is centered on a data lake but also incorporates a data preparation layer, data persistence layer, a presentation layer and a comprehensive security model. In parallel we are embarking on a comprehensive data governance strategy to tie all the moving pieces together and help us align our work with our key business drivers.
3. Tell me about the right tool you used recently to solve customer problem?
In my view, it’s not about using the right tool to solve a single customer problem. It’s about building a platform that you can plug any tool you want to give you the capabilities to solve lots of problems.
4. Where are we now today in terms of the Big data, and where do you think we’ll go over the next five years?
The Healthcare industry is still in its infancy stage in terms of discovering new use cases that we can tackle with Big Data. There are endless possibilities from improving patient outcomes with personalized medicine, predicting and reducing infection rates, better modeling of disease states, etc. We could also use big data to help bring down the cost curve of healthcare and create new healthcare models.
In the next five years, I think there will be more of a convergence of Big data and AI and there will be tools that will make it easier to get to insight faster. AI will continue to mature and supplant the process necessary to create algorithms today. We will be able to create and test an almost limitless number of scenarios that will open up new possibilities that blur domains.
5. You’ve already hired approximately 13 people in the last year. What would be your pitch to folks out there to join your Organization? Why does your organization matter in the world?
SCL Health is a faith-based, nonprofit healthcare organization dedicated to improving the health of the people and communities we serve, especially the poor and vulnerable. We have the opportunity to impact the lives of those in the communities we serve but also shape the future of healthcare. If you want to use your powers for good while building the future of healthcare then this is the place to be.
6. What are some of the best takeaways that the attendees can have from your "Building A Modern Healthcare Data Platform (And Organization)" talk?
Some key takeaways include redefining what a patient is through big data, why you need a modern data platform, and what technologies are important in healthcare.
7. What are the top 5 Big data Use cases in enterprises?
For healthcare, they are:
- Infection rate prediction and prevention
- Precision medicine and personalized care
- Population health management (risk stratification)
- Reducing preventable hospital readmissions
- Reducing waste and controlling costs
8. Which company do you think is winning the global Big Data race?
Healthcare is ripe for disruption and there are a burgeoning number of startups along with entrenched players that are starting to focus on healthcare. We are just in our infancy in terms of which of these companies can really deliver the next evolution of healthcare.
9. Any closing remarks
Thank you for the opportunity to share our vision around a modern healthcare data platform. I look forward to meeting my peers and peers across other industries and the advances they are making with Big Data.
