Blockchain driven Pervasive Control Framework for Adaptive IoT Integration and Automation in Heterogeneous Cloud Environment
Abstract
In recent years, blockchain technologies claim to fundamentally change the view of smart manufacturing systems (SMS), streamlining of processes, security in operations, and information flow across the supply-chain. Today, many industries leverage IoT devices in association with corresponding predictive analytics in their connected ecosystems. Deployments of IoT devices can be complex, and a distributed ledger is well suited to provide IoT device identification, authentication and seamless secure data transfer. Blockchain can provide an increased level of transparency, control, and visibility to enable granular level of knowledge as well as history of connected devices for troubleshooting purposes in heterogeneous cloud environment. Developments in digital technologies and consequential decentralization in intelligent systems are the driving forces in the ongoing advancements to constitute adaptive IoT integration and automation. Digitalization offers many promising capabilities. However, numerous challenges are encountered to address automation in controls such as industrial robots and real-time updates to service parts supply-chain. Blockchain driven pervasive control framework introduces coherent, structured, and standardized approach at different levels of SMS during advancement of adaptive manufacturing capabilities. The implementation of blockchain technology for IoT has several common unknowns for practitioners and researchers. Specifically, how to effectively leverage, incorporate, and upgrade existing landscape of integration services, processes, and infrastructures. The primary advantages of implying the framework driven approach to achieve blockchain enabled controls are the factual reference for decisions and induction of an evolving connected ecosystem in heterogeneous cloud. Blockchain enables device autonomy (smart contract), individual identity, integrity of data and supports peer to peer communication by removing technical bottlenecks and inefficiencies. It provisions a robust and resilient method of advancing in heterogeneous cloud environment. Distributed controls are realized in real-time through the blockchain nodes that recognizes actual condition of IoT assets and their interdependencies. Proven use case (or example) is presented to demonstrate the integrity of blockchain driven pervasive control framework. The characteristics, challenges, and advantages to imply blockchain technology to achieve IoT integration and automation in heterogeneous cloud are conferred.
