Data Science, AI and Ethics – The Moral Lens

Abstract

More data was created in 2017 than the previous 5,000 years of humanity. Now that is hard to believe but it is a fact. And all this data is helping us save lives, predict disaster, and give you and me a personalized experience and fulfill our unarticulated needs.

But all of this data means that every human, dog, cow, Nest, refrigerator, toilet seat is being monitored 24/7, 365 days a year. And this data is obviously giving rise to amazing AI and data science (the reason we are all gathered here) to make better predictions and postulations. All good. Except with all this data collection and cognitive analysis there is an angle that is often overlooked - and that is the ethical and moral angle.

Do we know how much of our data is with the big 7’s hub economies of the world. Or the next 7000 mini-economies below that. With GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) there is much greater specificity and obscene penalties for non-compliance that is shining a bigger light on who owns this data, how it needs to be purged on demand, ported when requested etc.

But we need to do better as consumers, vendors and service integrators. Join this session as I reveal some myth-busting, jaw-dropping ethical boundaries that have been pushed. And penalties that producers and consumers have had to pay. But more importantly offer solutions to all three stakeholders – consumers, producers and System Integrators how we can go beyond GDPR and define our own EDHP – Ethical Data Honesty Pact – where we can be benefit from the advances that data science and AI promise, yet be cognizant of the that we are paying and always be in control of the risk-reward equation.
