Topic

Covid-19, Flatten the Curve, and Machine Learning

Abstract

In this presentation and live demonstration we’ll look at “the Curve” that models the spread of Covid-19 Pandemic. Logistic curves have
multiple applications beyond Covid-19, the wiki identifies medical, chemical, agricultural, economics, and other uses.
Medical researchers have published numerous articles on the subject.   We’ll see that model assumptions can result in overly optimistic predictions.
The live demonstration will include classification of logistic curves representing different propagation rates using SparkML.  A toolkit will be provided via github so you can generate your own datasets and experiment with logistic curve classification.
We will use a hybrid-cloud computing model demonstrating machine learning both “on-premise” and in "the cloud."

Profile

Marty Lurie started his computer career generating chads while attempting to write Fortran on an IBM 1130. His day job is Hadoop Systems Engineering at Cloudera, but if pressed he will admit he mostly plays with computers. His favorite program is the one he wrote to connect his Nordic Track to his laptop (the laptop lost two pounds, and lowered its cholesterol by 20%). Marty is a Cloudera Certified Hadoop Administrator, Cloudera Certified Hadoop Developer, an IBM-certified Advanced WebSphere Administrator, Informix-certified Professional, Certified DB2 DBA, Certified Business Intelligence Solutions Professional, Linux+ Certified, and has trained his dog to play basketball.
